While Latinas have a rich history of leadership in their communities, they are underrepresented in all levels of government. From 2007 to 2012, the share of Latina women earning at or below minimum wage more than tripled. Latina women make 88 percent of their male counterparts’ annual full-time earnings. White women are projected to wait 40 more years, and Black women are projected to wait another 108. The Economic Policy Institute estimates that if the minimum wage were increased to $12 per hour by 2020 – a proposal introduced in Congress that lawmakers ultimately didn’t take up – then more than 35 million workers would receive a raise. The majority of those workers are women, 4.2 million are Latinas, and over 38 percent of Latinos who would benefit are parents.
Diana Franco, the executive director of WE NYC, a city government program that provides support services for women entrepreneurs, says that an estimated 35%-40% of the more than 9,000 participants in the program since 2015 have been Hispanic. And the number of firms owned by women of color has increased at about double the rate of female-owned businesses overall since 2014, according to a 2019 report by American Express. But there’s a more insidious side to this kind of stereotyping — besides being inaccurate, these types of depictions have been used to blame high rates of teen pregnancies in the community on the “spicy Latina.” As women, racial and ethnic minorities and members of a low socioeconomic status group, Latinas posses a triple minority status, all of which impact their educational opportunities.
These conditions lower the income that Latino families bring to their household and some find living each day very difficult. When an undocumented parent is deported or detained, income will be lowered significantly if the other parent also supports the family financially. The parent who is left has to look after the family and might find working difficult to manage along with other responsibilities. Even if families aren’t separated, Latinos are constantly living in fear that they will lose their economic footing. Despite the struggles Latinos families encounter, they have found ways to keep motivated.
After they Bay of Pigs failure, many middle class Cuban families sought escape from the newly communist Cuba in the United States. Thus, many Cuban women found themselves in the United States as a result of their family. After the Cuban Missile Crisis, the ability for Cubans to immigrate with their families became limited as a result of strained US-Cuba relations.
A White, non-Hispanic man with only an associate’s degree, on the other hand, generally makes $54,620. This comparison offers a bleak perspective of the position that Latina women are in – that despite having more education, some Latina women still earn lower wages and must work longer to make the same amount of money. This has disastrous consequences for the Latino community by denying them monetary resources that would ultimately benefit them.
The IWPR states that growing organizations are currently providing English tutors and access to education. Programs specifically for Latina immigrants now use an adaptation tactic of teaching, rather than an assimilation ideology to help this population adjust to American life. Programs like these include Casa Latina Programs, providing education on English, workers’ rights, and the consumer culture of America.
These studies provide an important picture of how gender bias plays out in everyday workplace interactions. My previous research has shown that there are four major patterns of bias women face at work.
